Help! Can someone explain this to me?

Hi,

I haven’t been knitting for very long and wanted to knit myself a pair of wrist warmers. I bought a pattern here that actually seemed pretty simple, but now I’m stuck.

Here’s part of the pattern:

Cast on 45 sts, knit 8 cm in garter stitch,
then knit short rows for the thumb opening:
Knit 10 sts, place them on hold,
now knit 3 sts, 1 yarn over, turn the work, knit to the end of the row,
knit 5 sts, 1 yarn over, turn, knit to the end of the row,

I’ve completed the 8 cm in garter stitch, but how do I continue from here?
