Crocheting and Knitting in School

I used to knit and sew in school. Are those kinds of things still taught today?
Or have they been completely removed from the curriculum? Did you have classes like that in school, too?
There are a few generations represented here, and some of you have kids, so maybe we can find out what’s changed.
I’m really curious :)

I also had crochet and knitting classes back in (elementary) school (from 1986–1990). I think the class was called “crafts” and alternated with other hands-on activities. I loved it!
My daughter is now in second grade, and unfortunately, her school doesn’t offer anything like that...

I had needlework and creative arts in primary school and secondary school

I was born in 1981

my siblings had it in secondary school too - but the boys switched to shop class in 7th grade

my 2 brothers were born in 1988 and 2000

my sister - also born in 2000 - only had embroidery in 4th grade, has only just moved on to secondary school, and so far I don't know whether they do crochet or anything like that, but she can do it anyway, I taught her

Here, we still have a “crafts” class in elementary school that includes textile design. It’s a mix of needlework and crafts. The kids are supposed to learn free-form design with thread, then free-form embroidery, bound embroidery, crocheting, and knitting. In arts and crafts, they work with paper, clay, wood... Unfortunately, though, this isn’t necessarily encouraged in secondary schools anymore. Here in Bavaria, for example, the Realschule can decide whether to offer arts and crafts and textile design or art in 5th grade. Very often, the choice falls on art—perhaps often due to space constraints. It’s a shame, really. My daughter (11) attends a Gymnasium and no longer has any classes in these areas. However, she’s very interested and now knits and crochets with me at home. We really enjoy it.

I also had crochet and knitting in needlework class in elementary school, and later in high school we sewed and knitted.
My nephew has now also learned to crochet in elementary school.
Here in Austria, it isn’t explicitly mentioned in the curriculum, but it fits in with the skills and competencies described there.
In our elementary schools, at any rate, it’s still done from time to time.
Best regards,
Karin

In elementary school, I only did arts and crafts and sewing, but in what was then called the “orientation stage” (5th and 6th grade), I also took classes in woodworking and textile design. In the latter class, we sewed and knitted. I always really enjoyed that, and I kept my projects for a long time :)

My oldest (7) has already tried her hand at sewing. She’s also learning to crochet from her mom :)
