Casting on for crocheting

I always cast on by hand without a crochet hook because I don't know how to do it with a crochet hook. How do you do it?

But doing it by hand is basically the same thing ;-)

With a crochet hook: a foundation chain or a magic ring for round projects.

You form a loop, insert the hook into it, and pull the yarn through (just like with finger crocheting). Using only the hook.
For long foundation chains, I use a second ball of yarn just for starting. That way, if any chain stitches are missing, I can crochet a few more onto the end. Or I make about 3 extra stitches from the start, which I unravel later.
For rounds, I make a magic ring and lay the yarn tail along the ring, so I crochet over it right away. So I don’t have to weave it in, I crochet over the yarn tail at the end as well, for example with the last 3 double crochets, securing it as I go.
