Hi, I'm looking for a pattern for knitting a sweater starting with the sleeves.
Does anyone have any EXPERIENCE with this?
Thanks

Do you mean a sweater that’s knitted across from one sleeve to the other? I made something like that a long time ago, but I didn’t use a pattern. I quickly drew a diagram—maybe someone else can visualize what I mean and might know of a pattern that works on this principle.

It’s a little blurry—sorry :-) But in principle, it’s very simple because it’s knitted in one piece and can be easily adjusted to your own measurements.

@iglinz then go ahead and write a pattern for it, I’d be interested too :-)

So far, I’d only known starting with the front piece across the width, then picking up stitches for the sleeves, then decreasing again and finishing with the back piece.
Starting from sleeve to sleeve is new to me.

Hi, it works and looks great too, but I did it once ages ago.
I’ll give it a try and write it down.
Thanks

It’s not exactly a sweater, but this jacket is also crocheted from sleeve to sleeve:

Oh dear, Anja, I’d have to knit the whole sweater all over again. But who knows...

I'll give you the theory:

First you knit the left sleeve, then at the end of the sleeve you pick up new stitches on both sides for the length of the lower sections of the back and front pieces. It’s easiest if you knit a square or straight neckline. To do this, you bind off the respective stitches at the appropriate point and cast them on again at the end of the neckline. From the middle of the sweater pieces (that is, the middle of the neckline), you continue knitting in reverse. So at the appropriate point you bind off the stitches for the front and back pieces again, leaving you with the sleeve stitches. Then you knit the right sleeve in reverse, the same way as the first sleeve. Only now, the increases from the left sleeve are worked as decreases.

It’s important to measure a little beforehand so you know where you want to place the neckline.

Best wishes

Michaela

I make myself a sewing pattern; it has worked well so far

Hi, yes, that’s exactly what I meant!
Thanks—now I don’t have to design it myself. It works really well for a piece with vertical stripes.
Thanks, and have fun, fellow knitters—you can crochet this way, too.

That’s exactly how you do it, Michaela.
