Sewing on buttons

Hi,

this is probably a bit too basic
for you pros who post here, but I wanted to ask if you have any tips on how to sew on buttons so they stay on well.
Sewing on buttons isn’t my favorite thing to do, so I’d rather not have to do it every few weeks.

Do you have any tips for me?

have you ever tried Sternzwirn?
It’s a bit sturdier than regular sewing thread.
For example, you can find it here on Amazon:

Sternzwirn doesn’t break as easily, which is really handy for sewing on buttons.

It’s also a good idea to run the thread over a candle stub (along the side, not over the wick) before sewing—this helps the thread last longer. But it will probably wash out sooner or later. I wouldn’t do the wax thing with delicate fabrics, though.
And once you’ve sewn the button on, wrap the thread around a few more times between the pants and the button, then pull the thread through the button and the pants again. That also helps the button stay on longer.

thanks for the tip about buttonhole twist—I actually have some.
It came in one of those sewing kits, but I never really understood what it was actually good for.
Having a mental block like that isn’t always very practical ;)

As for the candle thing, I’m skeptical.

That thing with wrapping the thread a few more times between the trousers and the button and then threading it through again etc.—I’ve always done that.
But without buttonhole twist, just with regular sewing thread.

Buttonhole thread is great; I have some in my sewing box too.
It doesn’t cost a fortune, but you can use it again and again.
