Turning chains when knitting?

Hi,
I’m more of a crocheter.
I was just curious—how do you gain height at the beginning of a row when knitting? Are there turning chains, or is it done differently?

I’ve never really gotten very far with knitting, so I have no idea.
It would be great if someone could explain this to me.
I actually have circular needles here, and I wanted to give it a try.
Do you also need something to gain height when knitting in the round, or is that—if at all—only necessary when knitting in rows?

Turning chains—you need those for crocheting. In knitting, you have edge stitches.

Better than I could put it into words—there’s even a video.
You adjust the stitch height by pulling the yarn tighter or looser.

Since I’ve had these craft books, some of my questions have been answered.
It’s just a bit of a hassle in the long run when you have to scour the internet for information—a little bit here, a little bit there. But I haven’t found any truly comprehensive answers to my questions on a single page yet—I’ve always had to consult multiple sites. On the other hand, books come with their own set of challenges. Still, sometimes it’s really nice to have something printed in your hands. These books seem to be pretty popular. It surprises me a bit that, especially in an age when everyone has the internet, something like this is still in demand. But I’m glad they exist.
