For anyone who hasn’t wrapped their back-to-school gifts yet and is urgently looking for a suitable bag, I have a suggestion: How about this handmade backpack?

This gift bag is made from cardstock and measures approx. 16.5 x 22.5 x 9 cm. The backpack is quick and easy to make and can also be recreated by craft beginners without much effort.

Kasimir the Cat, the Slightly Different Pencil Case

>>> pattern <<<

Kasimir the Cat isn’t your typical cat, but he’ll take good care of your pens and everything else that fits inside a pencil case.
The pattern is also suitable for ambitious beginners; you should be familiar with the crochet techniques listed below.

Dimensions (pencil case only, without arms/legs/ears/tail):
  • Length: 24 cm
  • Width: 11 cm
Materials needed:
    • Cotton yarn (115 m per 50 g)—other types of yarn can also be used; the pencil case will then be proportionally larger or smaller
    • Quantities are always rounded up to the nearest 5 g:
    • 40 g main color (pencil case) – turquoise/petrol
    • 15 g secondary color 1 – java/orange
    • 15 g secondary color 2 – light green
    • 10 g secondary color 3 – red
    • 5 g white, plus leftover black yarn
    • 1 zipper, 22 cm long, in a matching color + sewing thread for attaching
    • some stuffing for the eyes
    • Crochet hook sizes 2.5 and 3.5
    • Darning needle, pins, sewing needle
Skills:
  • Magic Ring
  • Chain stitches
  • Single crochet, including increases and decreases
  • Slip stitches, double crochet, including decreases
  • Double crochet with a foot loop (if you’re unfamiliar with this, there are great videos on YouTube)
  • Color changes

A very special pencil case that you can give a little cuddle every now and then is Wasti the dachshund. When he’s sitting on your desk, he wants to be petted every once in a while. But in return, he keeps your school supplies organized and stores all your pens in his belly. Isn’t that a lovely gift for starting school? But even a preschooler would be thrilled to receive a pencil case like this.

Wasti is quick and easy to crochet. Make him brown or colorful—whatever you like.
It’s best to get started right away so you’ll have him ready in time for starting school. Click here for the pattern!

How about a little bag charm for a school backpack as a good-luck charm or a little comforter?
Polly the Bunny & Paule the Bear are perfect for this.

The pattern is described in detail and well illustrated, so even beginners can achieve great results. The bag charms measure about 14 cm (when using the specified yarn weight and hook size).

You should know how to crochet single crochet, increases and decreases, as well as chain stitches and slip stitches.

Materials needed:
  • Crocheted with cotton yarn, hook size 3–3 1/2, 170 m/50 g in various colors (a great way to use up leftover yarn)
  • Crochet hook size 2.5
  • Threading needle, darning needle
  • Embroidery floss in various colors
  • 4 small safety eyes, size 6 mm
  • 2 small buttons
  • Stuffing, 2 key rings

Is your child starting school and ready to rock it? Then your brand-new “i-Dötz” — as we say here — absolutely needs the sewing guitar!

Now that’s a different kind of gift for starting school!

The sewing guitar is really quick to sew — the youngest test sewer was 9 years old! Even complete beginners can make it.
The ebook includes two sewing patterns for an electric guitar and a “Flying V” guitar, both available in two sizes.

The sewing instructions are well illustrated and clearly explained. Thanks to my wonderful test sewers, there are lots and lots of design ideas included.

Here’s the ebook:
