Crochet sweater using only single crochet

I still have the crochet book open
and there are several patterns in it for crocheting sweaters (I’d almost call them recipes)

and for the main part (apart from the cuffs at the sleeves, waist, and neckline), they actually use only and exclusively single crochet stitches.

So
purely subjectively, I imagine that the sweater would be a really tedious project
because using only single crochet makes it grow pretty slowly
that will take forever
and besides
I think
that using only single crochet creates a rather stiff piece of crochet
it’s pretty inflexible
I once tried to crochet myself a scarf using only single crochet stitches
it wasn’t soft or snug at all
I don’t like that at all

I do know that it’s a matter of taste
what do you all think?

I skimmed through today’s posts—you really shouldn’t be given a crochet book. Where are the smilies here again? I can’t find them. Are there none here, or am I just too clumsy?

Back to the topic: If you don’t like sweaters made entirely of single crochet, then take a look around. You’re sure to find a pattern or two that uses half double crochet or double crochet. That’ll make the whole thing a bit looser. If you can’t find anything suitable in that regard, you’ll just have to learn to knit. Compared to crochet, knitting has a less rigid structure, so it might be a bit softer. Of course, it always depends on the technique used, but also on the individual’s personal “style” when crafting.
Some people knit or crochet more tightly, while others’ stitches are looser and more generous.
This naturally has a big impact on the final product’s size and fluffiness.

So far I haven’t seen any sweater patterns using half double crochet or double crochet yet. Is it called a regular or just a plain double crochet if it isn’t a half double crochet? But just as an aside. Let’s see what I can find on that.
Knitting, no, I don’t like that. I’d rather look for a crochet pattern.
I have no idea whether my crocheting is tight or not so tight. It’s definitely not overly loose, though, and I can do it evenly too. And I can still get the crochet hook through the stitches. So for me it isn’t too tight. That’s how it is now; at the beginning I had more problems with that.

It’s quite possible that the other beginners don’t feel confident enough to ask. That’s why it’s good that you’re asking all these beginner questions. Hopefully, that will encourage others to chime in.

If I find a pattern for a sweater using half double crochet or double crochet stitches, I’ll share it with you.

Sweaters crocheted in single crochet might not be quite as fluffy, but do they perhaps hold up better precisely because of those stitches?

But there are also lots of questions when it comes to crocheting. I hope the others will actually join in.
I borrowed some more books from the city library, with tips and tricks for beginners and also patterns for sweaters.
Since I’m looking for a pattern that matches my crochet skills, I first need an overview.
