Backpack

Hello, fellow craft lovers!

Can you give me a tip on how to keep crocheted backpacks from sagging at the bottom and on the straps?

I’ve tried threading a clothesline through them before, but it was a total flop… awful.
My daughter suggested threading wider leather straps through them—kind of like narrow belts. I can picture that looking nice, but I’m having trouble finding them.

If anyone has a good tip, I’d really appreciate it.

I wish you all a wonderful, sunny, and stress-free weekend.

P.S. I’d like to thank everyone who’s participating in—and has already participated in—my thread:

Hello, Marlies,
I have an idea for that, though I haven’t tried it yet: you could crochet something like a casing and crochet a round bamboo bag handle into it horizontally. Then the bag opening will always stay the same and stable.
Best, Traudelina

...but it can’t be drawn closed anymore—guess it wasn’t such a backpack hit after all...

Hi Traudelina, thanks for your suggestion. Sounds good—definitely for bags. Yes, backpacks should be able to be closed since they’re usually carried on your back.

But thanks again for that.

I hope you continue to have lots of fun knitting and crocheting!

Hi Marlies,
to keep the bottom from sagging, I’ve tried two methods:
-> reinforcing the bottom with sturdy fabric and interfacing or faux leather (sewn on the inside)
-> crocheting the bottom in double layers

For the straps, I used webbing—either on its own with buckles, or crocheted around it.
I also didn’t just attach the straps to the top and bottom of the backpack, but along the entire height of the backpack. That way, the straps also provide additional support for the backpack.

Maybe these tips will help you?
Best regards,
Karin
