Knitting Socks

I still have a lot of sock yarn in my stash, and now I’m curious: How do you knit socks? The traditional way with a set of double-pointed needles? Which heel method do you prefer? Have you ever started at the toe? What has worked best for you?

I really enjoy knitting socks, but these days I only knit them using my special heel method. That way, I don’t have to do any calculations—no heel flap, nothing like that. You can find the pattern for it in my shop.

I’m not really a sock knitter, but I’ve knitted a few pairs. My favorite method is the toe-up approach—that is, from the toe to the cuff. That way, I can most easily tell when I need to start the heel.
For the heel, I prefer the boomerang method with short rows.
And since I don’t like a set of double-pointed needles either, I prefer to knit using the Magic Loop method on a long circular needle.

Well, I love the step heel—it does take more work
but it looks great!

I only knit spiral socks now—without a heel at all. That way, they fit my grandson for a long time. I start at the top with a cuff and knit all the way to the toe.

I like spiral socks best because then I don’t have to worry about the heel.
