Potholder yarn is a cotton yarn with a yardage of approximately 85–90 m per 50 g. It is also called “school yarn.”

Hey there! Potholder yarn is 100% cotton and has a “grippier” texture… so if you hold potholder yarn and, as mentioned before, school yarn in your hand and compare them to, say, Catania yarn, you’ll notice the difference right away

I’ve also crocheted a few things with school yarn, so it’s suitable for amigurumi, too…

Best regards

Potholder yarn is a cotton yarn that is usually not mercerized, singed, or combed. As a result, it is somewhat “coarser” and less elegant than cotton yarns that have been treated and finished in this way, and it also has less sheen.
When cotton yarn is singed, it means the yarn is passed over a gas flame so that short, protruding fibers are singed off, resulting in a smooth and fine appearance.
During mercerization, the yarn is exposed to caustic soda while under tension, which changes its structure. Among other things, mercerization gives the yarn a silky sheen.
Potholder yarn is therefore also cheaper than treated cotton yarns.
Best regards,
Karin

For Tolas, I usually only use Catania—I think it looks nicer.
