False double crochet at the beginning of a row

Hi everyone,
I heard about something called a “false double crochet” for the first time today. It was in a video by Julia from Woolpedia. Unfortunately, I can’t find the link to it anymore because I watched several of her videos today.
So you use the false double crochet at the beginning of a row because it looks nicer that way. As far as I remember, it’s used at the beginning of a row as a substitute for the first double crochet or for the 2–3 chain stitches that are sometimes used to replace the first double crochet. To do this, you pull the single loop you have into a longer loop, turn the crochet hook around, so that you have two loops, then make another yarn over (I’m not entirely sure about this part), and then complete the double crochet as usual.
Do you use this false double crochet technique?
Can it be used for anything other than the beginning of a row?

I found the video—just type in “Julia Woolpedia false double crochet video” and you’ll find it. Thanks for passing it on; it’s very helpful. The beginning looks much nicer. I’ve saved it and will give it a try. Unfortunately, I have to say that in videos, people often work too quickly when demonstrating. It’s not like that in all of them, but usually, unfortunately.
