I have a question for you
What yarn do you use for knitting?

Thanks

Hello Schnatter,

I’d say, whether you’re knitting or crocheting, it all depends on what you want to make.

Maybe a few examples:

  • for warm winter clothing, I like to use merino or alpaca wool, or wool blends (nice and warm and often very soft too)
  • for lighter summer items, shawls, bags, and especially for amigurumi, cotton (or cotton-blend yarns) has the best qualities (great colors, holds its shape well, and doesn’t keep you warm)
  • for baby toys like grasping animals or cuddle cloths, acrylic works quite well (nice and soft and light, and easy to wash)

What project do you specifically have in mind?

Best, Stefanie

As already mentioned, it depends on what you want to knit.
For example, I specialize in baby and children's toys, so I only use high-quality yarns, such as Mondial Bio Soft Cotton. I swear by this yarn; it's tested for harmful substances and is colorfast to saliva.

I prefer to knit with superwash merino. The yarn really has to be super soft, because I’m very sensitive to scratchy fabrics.
Cotton works too, but in many cases it’s too heavy for me.
I also really enjoy knitting with baby alpaca, especially for winter items.

Hi Schnatter,

Well, I like to use

  • summer sweaters and tops: cotton or cotton-blend yarns, possibly with silk or linen
  • Traditional garments: traditional wool for men’s outdoor jackets, merino yarns for us ladies, and merino or special saliva-resistant merino-microfiber blends for babies
  • Hats and scarves: merino / merino blends, alpaca, 6-ply sock yarn
  • Jackets, shawls, scarves: (lace) merino, alpaca, KidSilk (mohair), sock yarns (e.g., with cashmere)
  • Potholders: 100% cotton
  • Socks: I prefer sock yarns with alpaca, merino, cashmere, or aloe vera/jojoba oil—they’re so wonderfully soft and cozy even while you’re knitting
Well, actually, I like all kinds of yarns, since—luckily—no yarn ever itches me :-)
So for my outdoor jackets, I also absolutely love completely natural sheep’s wool.

Thanks.
That gives me some great yarn options.

I guess everyone has their own favorite type of yarn. You’ll probably have to try a few yourself to see what you like best.
For example, I love mohair (to wear), but I hate crocheting or knitting with it because you can’t unravel it if you make a mistake. And I like to crochet with 100% cotton, but I don’t particularly like wearing it. (That’s probably why I mainly make amigurumi.)

My yarn shop: www.traumgarne.eu

I usually use gradient yarns made from a cotton/acrylic blend.

I love hand-spun yarns (kid mohair, merino/silk, etc.), especially multicolored ones with long color gradients. It looks really nice when different thicknesses are combined.

I use a cotton/polyacrylic blend (50%/50%) for both knitting and crocheting.
