Extended double crochet—how does it work?

I’ve heard there’s a variation on regular double crochet where you leave a loop “along the way.” But I haven’t really figured it out yet.
Could someone explain it to me again? What’s the point of that, anyway?

I do know how to do it, but I’m not very good at explaining it

but surprisingly, I can’t find anything useful.

I get it now—so you do it like a double crochet: yarn over, then pull up the yarn from the stitch as usual. Just pull it up, don’t pull it through.
Then you make a chain stitch and continue as you would with a regular double crochet.

I know this as a “double crochet with a foot loop.” This stitch is a little taller than a regular double crochet. I use it in filet crochet so that the squares come out square. Otherwise, with regular double crochets, mine tend to be a little wider than they are tall.
