Trouble Counting Stitches

Hi everyone,

it always frustrates me so much when I lose track of my stitches while counting. Is there any way to make counting easier? It would be sooo great if there were a clever technique :-)

Hugs. Thanks!

Either use a stitch marker or go the old-fashioned route: paper and pencil—that’s how I do it with my patterns too.

Best regards, Johanna

I sometimes use stitch markers when knitting patterns. When crocheting, it depends on what you’re making. In rows, I don’t have to count—the number always works out. There are two techniques for getting an even edge, and then the stitch count is always right. In rounds, you can see the increases and decreases, so you can easily follow along, since the increases and decreases are done evenly there.
What exactly are you counting stitches for?

I also do everything with a piece of paper and a pencil. I even make a mark for every round. That way, I’m sure to end up with two socks of the same size.

Best wishes, Astrid

Okay, when crocheting socks, it’s easy to double-check your count :) When knitting, I sometimes use a centimeter ruler—it’s always accurate when you double-check—but there are also some projects where I keep tally marks; that’s true. By the way, there are also row and stitch counters available in stores.

Thanks for the replies! @nadelkissen, I’m crocheting a hat—in rounds. But my question is about how I can count without making mistakes, or how I can keep counting if I get distracted. I don’t like having to start over from the beginning all the time.

I always mark the start of the rounds with a separate strand of yarn. Then, when the pattern says to crochet 8 rounds of 60 sts each, I just have to count the strands.

Hi, I also mark the rounds with a strand of yarn, and with each new round I pull the end of the yarn up

@flyowl: I always struggle with counting stitches too
but it gets better over time with lots of practice and patience and all that :)
