Rainbow Yarn—Should I Only Use It for a Shawl?

Hi,

I bought some beautiful rainbow-colored yarn, but I don’t want to use it to make a triangular shawl—I’d much rather make a sweater or poncho out of it... Are there any restrictions, or do you think that would work? I mean because of the color gradient.

I think it would look very nice as a sweater or poncho. Best as a RVO (raglan from the top down), then the color gradient will really show to its best advantage. 
Maybe you’d like to show a photo of the yarn?

That’s gorgeous! I could totally see making a poncho out of it. The advantage of a poncho is that you can keep knitting until you run out of yarn, and the color gradient stays completely intact. How much yardage does the yarn cake have?

I also always think it looks very nice when you work a color gradient into stripes, for example in combination with dark blue. That could go wonderfully with the cake ...

A yarn cake has 800 m of yarn :-)
I was thinking of making a poncho with sleeves and knitting from sleeve to sleeve—that way I’ll get the color gradient too… or I’ll just see how far I can get with one yarn cake—I’m really curious!!
