Dear users, dear authors,
are there any tips you can give beginners when it comes to crafts? Are there any questions about crafts that you’d really like to have answered?
I have a question:
Why is construction paper also called photo paper?

Cardstock and photo paper are two different types of paper. Construction paper is the thinner kind, and cardstock is the thicker, sturdier kind (usually around 300 g).

Construction paper is easier for folding, while cardstock is better suited for window decorations or sturdier crafts.

A little paper basics:

- construction paper and colored cardstock are colored types of paper that, unlike colored paper, are not dyed afterward but are made from dyed raw material. The construction paper is thin (130 g/m²), easy to cut and fold. The colored cardstock is thick (300 g/m²), can be cut well with scissors and a craft knife, but not very well with a scalpel; it is sturdy and is used, for example, for making cards, window pictures, and three-dimensional objects.
- photo cardstock and colored cardstock are two different names for the same type of paper; photo cardstock is a common retail term, while colored cardstock is common in everyday usage. Despite a lot of research, I haven’t been able to find out why these two terms exist or what photo cardstock has to do with photos.

photo paper, however, has little to do with crafting—that is coated paper used for printing photos.

It’s called “photo cardstock” because it’s used to mount multiple photos onto a poster for presentations (e.g., at school). It’s sturdy enough that the paper doesn’t curl or tear right away.

@ruthk, I had already thought that photo board might be called that because it is used either for mounting photos or for making mat boards, but I haven’t found any confirmation of that online. I mean, photo board is also used extensively for making window decorations or greeting cards, but it’s still not called window-decoration board or greeting-card board. Why photo board of all things? Maybe someone else has an explanation.
