Birthday Pillow

The idea for the birthday pillow came to me when I was browsing through the blogs here the other day. That’s where I stumbled upon the star stitch pattern, and just like that, the idea for the pillow was born. I then crocheted the back in a basketweave pattern using post double crochet, so it can be decorated on either side as desired. I’ll be giving it to my great-aunt next week—she celebrated her 90th birthday last week.

A very beautiful pillow, dear Martina. Such a lovely, warm shade. And I also like that the pillow has two different sides. That way, you can have one side facing out one day and the other the next. You can practically redecorate it with one quick turn. The dear lady will surely be very happy.<\/p>

At first, I wanted to make a completely different pillow, but the closer the birthday got, the less I liked it. That’s why I decided on this design—because I knew it would be better received and more appreciated. I’m glad it turned out so great; it makes giving it as a gift even more fun. 

I can totally relate. At first you think you still have plenty of time, and then it starts running out. That’s when you need a brilliant idea fast. Once you have that—and the materials—things usually go like clockwork. And a beautiful gift brings you joy, too, even as you’re giving it away. And when the gift is well-received by the recipient and you see the joy on their face, all the work was worth it. That’s exactly what makes crafting so much fun.
