My favorite hat is a crocheted one.

The rim, made with single crochet stitches, is very dense and sturdy. I was really surprised by that.
Before, I only ever knitted hats, and if the brim isn’t double-layered, I tend to wear them on days when it’s not too cold.

So I have quite a few hats to choose from, and I really enjoy wearing them.
Best wishes to everyone
Petra
By the sea, I prefer to wear a sewn jersey beanie.
Otherwise, I have knitted hats for cooler temperatures.
Does anyone have a tip for people who wear glasses? Ever since I started wearing them, I’ve found hats uncomfortable around the arms of my glasses.
It’s like a gap where wind or cool air can get in. 😳
Best, Claudia
Hi Claudia, maybe you could thread the temples of your glasses through the knitted fabric from the outside? So, make a small hole in the right spot, then thread the temples through it so they go inside and sit behind your ears. For a hat with a double folded brim, you’ll obviously need two holes in the right places.

Dear Claudia, maybe the glasses still feel a little strange to you. If you have glasses with thin temples, you’ll hardly notice them after a short while. If you know how to sew, you can sew a cuff made of cozy teddy fabric onto the hat. It’ll rest softly on your ears and provide a good seal. In my opinion, smooth cuffs don’t work as well.
Back in my youth, I used to have crocheted, beret-shaped hats that you wore at an angle on your head. Later, I had knitted hats. But the cold always seeped through the stitches.
Nowadays, I prefer to wear sewn hats. That way, I can choose the thickness of the fabric (jersey, sweatshirt fabric, alpine fleece) myself; I can make them single- or double-layered; and I can adjust the width and height of the cuff to fit my ears and my head.
There’s been a shift with my grandchildren, too: I used to knit them warm hats out of real wool. Today, they only want hats with something on them. They don’t want knitted hats at all anymore. I just finished a winter set for my granddaughter with her beloved unicorns on it.

Best regards, Ina
Hi, I had to crochet myself a new hat this year because last year’s one shrunk to half its size after I washed it.
I also crocheted a pointed hat at my niece’s request. I really like it, but at 66 years old, I’m definitely not wearing something like that anymore.
Why not? We’re at an age where we can make and wear whatever we like. Who’s going to stop us now?
Where does it say that you can’t or aren’t allowed to wear a hat like that? If you like it, go for it and enjoy warm ears and a warm head :-)
Best, Inge
