1 ball of yarn: what can you make with it?

What can you make from a ball of yarn (of your choice) and some leftover yarn?

Hi Josefa, assuming it’s a 100-gram skein of sock yarn with about 400 meters of yardage, you can make a lot with it.

• Socks, of course. The leftover yarn you mentioned is perfect for a colorful colorwork pattern or simply stripes.
• Gloves. The amount should be just enough for mittens as well as full-finger gloves, unless you’re knitting an extra-long cuff. Here, too: a small colorwork pattern or stripes.
• A hat. I even knitted one once using double strands of yarn, and the 400 m (which is actually only 200 m) was enough. 
• A loop (cowl, infinity scarf). They don’t always have to be super long. By the way, there’s one length I find awful: when a loop is longer than a single loose wrap around the neck but not long enough for two. Then it never sits where I need the warmth—it just dangles at chest level. 
• A small shawl, triangular or rounded. There are almost endless possibilities for this—starting from the top with increases, or working across from corner to corner, or asymmetrically—and certainly millions of pattern variations, whether solid-colored or made with leftover yarn in other colors.
