Dear community,
how about giving the oldest yarn in your stash a chance this week?
Grab a nice pattern for it and just get started

The oldest yarn in my collection... from the ’80s... I’m being really stingy with it... since you can’t buy it anymore... I’m waiting for the RIGHT IDEA.

Otherwise, I work EVERY DAY with whatever’s left over from my yarn shop!
It’s all in the basement now and will definitely last a few more days;) 👍

What could you knit with 75 g (approx. 300 m) of angora yarn?

Thin scarves worn close to the neck are all the rage right now. They’re only 13 cm wide—so you might have just enough yarn for one. I’m knitting one myself right now and am curious to see if I’ll like the result. I wear scarves and shawls all year round, and I can definitely see myself wearing a narrow shawl like this.

Dear Petra, your basement is a paradise! That’s probably what everyone who can knit or crochet dreams of.

No, I didn’t want to use up the oldest yarn at all. There must be a reason why it hasn’t been picked out in decades. Maybe someone will inherit it someday and can then decide what to do with it. Until then, it’s safe and sound with me, kept warm and dry.

Best regards, Ina

I crocheted one of my favorite shawls from some old yarn. Because I liked it so much, I went to the yarn shop listed on the label. I wanted to buy more of that yarn so I could crochet even more with it. There, they laughed at me and said it was a real “vintage” yarn. They told me that yarn hadn’t been available since the ’70s.
And here’s the finished piece—I crocheted it in 2021 using my oldest yarn to date:

My oldest yarn comes from my mother’s stash; she passed away in 2008. She bought it in the ’70s.
I crocheted a mosaic blanket with it, and whenever I use it, I think of my mom.

I don’t even like my oldest yarn anymore. 🤭
But I also have some old treasures—and for those, no project is “good enough,” because then it would be “gone.” 😅
I know, that’s illogical… lol

Best wishes, Karoline

I don’t actually have that much really old yarn, but I received quite a bit as gifts last year, and not all of it is “my color”—so some of it might be pretty old.

I found something else today: A kind neighbor who came across some yarn while cleaning out her closet gave this to me. She wanted to knit a scarf with it, but then decided she didn’t feel like it after all. Well, after the yarn had just been lying around unused for a long time at my place too, I decided to use it up and crocheted “Angry Birds” (though mine aren’t actually angry) and then brushed them.
This was the yarn:
.
The turquoise “bird” was made from leftover yarn from a sweater. :-)

I inherited a lot of yarn from my mother back in 2005.
But my mother had kept an enormous number of scraps and single skeins in different colors, materials, and needle sizes.
And to be honest, in 20 years, I still haven’t come up with anything I could do with them. Especially since I’ve been knitting nothing but socks for a while now. I wouldn’t be able to finish larger projects with my hands anymore.
But the yarn is too good to throw away. And I don’t know who would be happy to receive such a hodgepodge of different yarns. So where could I donate the yarn? I asked at the preschool years ago. They didn’t want the yarn. They said they already had enough boxes there.
