Sewing buttonholes by hand or with a sewing machine

What should you keep in mind when sewing buttonholes?

If your sewing machine has a buttonhole function, that’s really handy.... Just set it up... And then let it do its thing.....

It always depends on what the buttons are being sewn onto. For shirts and blouses, you can use a sewing machine to sew on buttons—it’s faster and gives a neater finish. But there are also fabrics where it’s better to use a needle and thread to sew on buttons.

For me, it depends on the garment.
For a nice blouse or a dirndl, I’d sew the buttonholes by hand and round off the edge where the fabric meets the seam.
This is also an advantage for some thicker jackets or coats.

My mom learned how to sew buttonholes back when she was in sewing school. There were all kinds of different styles back then. It really is an art.
Today, many sewing machines make it possible to sew nice-looking buttonholes.
But for special garments, I also think it’s lovely when the buttonhole is sewn by hand.
