Dividing and Rewinding Yarn—Any Ideas for How to Do This?

Hi, I have a question I can’t figure out on my own.

I have a looooooot of leftover yarn that I’d like to start using up.

My plan is to split the strands and twist them together again.

But I have absolutely no idea what tools I’d need to a) unwind the yarn and b) rewind it without the strands getting tangled or knotted.
Ideally, I’d like a solution that lets me wind two balls at the same time.

I hope it’s somewhat clear what I’m planning to do.
If you have any ideas or tips, I’d really appreciate it!

With woolly regards and thanks in advance!

Hi!
I don’t quite understand what you’re trying to do here…

But there are “yarn ball winders” for winding yarn. Just type it into the search bar on Google or Amazon.
These are operated by hand.

The best way to join the yarn is with the “magic knot” or the “Frankfurt knot.” But there are also other ways to invisibly join two balls of yarn (especially with thick yarn). Just search YouTube for “invisible yarn knots” or something similar.

I hope this helped a little?
Best regards, Conny

Thank you very much, Conny.
I’ll try to explain in more detail...
For example, I have 4-ply sock yarn in various color combinations. My idea is to split the yarn into two strands each and then combine these with other colors and “twist” them together so that I end up with a new 4-ply yarn.
I see the main challenge in splitting the yarn without the strands getting tangled, so I’m looking for a way to wind two skeins at a time if possible.
Maybe it won’t work at all—so far, I’ve only been thinking this through in my head....

I’ve already tried several times to split 4-ply sock yarn to get reinforcement yarn for the heel (2 strands each). That worked poorly to very poorly, since sock yarn is quite fuzzy and twisted. I can only imagine this working with unplied parallel-stranded yarn—preferably cotton—if at all. I don’t recommend it.
Woolly regards
Irene

Thanks, Irene. Yeah, that could be a problem—I hadn’t even thought of that. So far, I’ve only split cotton yarn for mini amigurumi...
So maybe I’ll try this on a small scale first before turning it into a bigger project. Anyway, I need to finish the socks I have planned first...🤭
