I run my own little Bobbel workshop and would like to offer some crochet patterns for a few of our Bobbel items here and there.
However, since I’m more of a winder than a crocheter, I need some help!
That’s why I’m looking for a ghostwriter. Someone who can design both simple and slightly more complex projects with me and write the patterns for them.
I’ll then purchase the finished product, at which point the full rights of use will be transferred to me.
Does anyone have any ideas, or does anyone know someone who knows someone???
if I understand you correctly, you’re looking for an author who will design simple and not-so-simple projects together with you, then crochet or knit them (I’m guessing using one of your yarn cakes), write the pattern for them, and then sell both to you for a price X. In addition, will he or she grant you the exclusive right of use?
Why shouldn’t a collaboration be possible? The compensation would have to be appropriate, and that would need to be negotiated. I’ve already created exclusive designs for clients who wanted a specific motif, for which they also acquired the rights of use.
I wish you the best of luck in your search ✊🏽.
Best regards, Karola
Why is it so important to you that you get full rights of use? In principle, that’s certainly possible. However, under these conditions, the purchase price for the finished product would likely be in the high four-digit range, perhaps even five figures, depending on the designer’s reputation. That means quite high costs combined with an equally high risk.
Another option would be to work with designers in a loose partnership. For example, you provide the yarn and the designer recommends the yarn used in the pattern. The pattern can be linked to or promoted on your website / Facebook / Instagram page. That way, you’d have beautiful models made from your Bobbel yarns to show, without major upfront costs and without risk.
legally speaking, it’s not possible for you to obtain all rights to a design that someone else created. Copyright generally remains with the person who came up with the idea.
What you can obtain or request is a license or permission to sell the pattern—possibly an exclusive license—so that no one else is allowed to offer this pattern.
Licenses generally don’t last forever; instead, they’re granted for a specific period of time, such as five years. After that, the right to distribute reverts to the creator, or a new license can be obtained.
