Dear Community,
What are some simple crafts suitable for children?

Last summer, I worked with children using a knitting dolly—a great way for kids to get their first experience with knitting. We used the knitting dolly to make ribbons, which the children wore as necklaces. The ribbons can also be rolled up and used as coasters.
Best regards, Sabine

Weaving would also be a good place to start.

Using a thick, sturdy cardboard lid—don’t use corrugated cardboard—you can make a simple, small weaving frame.

Hi everyone,

weaving works really well even for pretty young kids.
The knitting dolly is a classic way to introduce kids to needles and yarn—it works great even with preschoolers.
I also find finger knitting easy for kids to understand and do.
Then, of course, there’s making pom-poms, wet felting, gluing pictures together from fabric scraps, threading buttons...
Oh, there’s so much that even preschoolers can learn and do—they just need someone who’s willing to show them how and take the time to do so...

Best regards

That’s right, dear Nina.

There are plenty of ideas, but with young children, you always need adults to guide and help them. Instead of daycare, we look after our 6-year-old grandson Oskar every Wednesday. I always come up with things beforehand that we can craft together.

Painting is always a big hit. We paint rocks or Easter eggs, weave Easter baskets with thick felt yarn, and are now building an insect hotel step by step together. The most important thing is probably to take your time. It’s not about getting things done quickly, but about being able to do them at a leisurely pace. The world today is already so hectic anyway, so it’s nice when crafts provide a calmer atmosphere.

Crafting with paper, cardboard, feathers, beads, and glitter is always a good option, too.

Love, Ina
