Dear Community,
How old is the oldest wool in your stash? Do you have any plans for using it?

My oldest yarn is a wonderful cotton called “Holiday St. Tropez,” and it’s probably around 30 years old. The ZIP code on the label is still a four-digit number.

Unfortunately, I only have scraps left in various colors, and I haven’t yet figured out what to make with them.

After swapping another mixed wool bundle at a swap event, I really can’t complain—the oldest scraps are probably no more than 4 or 5 years old.

Here’s a photo of a purchase from 2017. The wool circled is still in my box, waiting for an idea.

But I also have quite a bit of yarn that was given to me, which is probably 30–40 years old, since the manufacturer hasn’t been around for a long time.

I also still have some yarn I bought online—a bad purchase. Back then, when online ordering first started, the selection was much larger than in stores. But the yarn is really hard to work with, so that was my first and last online yarn purchase to date.

And there’s also a cotton yarn, which is probably around 25 years old, just waiting for an idea.

Yarn from the GDR era, so 40 years old. I knitted a jumpsuit for a reborn doll out of a beautiful shade of pink.
The yarn is still in great condition despite its age.
You can’t always say the same about newer yarn. I once bought some on eBay that broke every few meters while I was knitting. I had to throw it away.

My oldest yarn dates back to my first knitting craze in the ’80s—a beautiful gray cotton yarn with a subtle sheen. It’s from Ilse-Wolle, which was kind of like the “Aldi of yarn”; the yarns were stored in big cardboard boxes on the floor, and the prices were handwritten on the boxes. That store was seriously addictive. Even though I was a student with hardly any money, I always walked out of there with enough yarn for 3 or 4 projects—it was wonderful. I wonder why Ilse-Wolle doesn’t exist anymore?
The problem is that 40 years ago, I weighed 30 kg less. What was enough for a sweater back then would probably only make a stole now...

My oldest wool is probably some angora yarn—one box of dark purple and one box of beige. It’s probably about 40 years old; it shed a lot when I worked with it and wore it. I used to have more of it. My record for the oldest wool is probably a ball of yarn that I inherited from my mother, among other things. This remnant was wrapped around a crumpled piece of newspaper from 1936 and is likely that old. I uncrumpled and ironed the newspaper as a keepsake.
Woolly regards
Irene

I have some sock yarn from my mom, who passed away 22 years ago.
I ordered a small loom and want to make a patchwork blanket
with it.

My oldest wool dates back to the ’70s and is a pure synthetic fiber from the GDR in light yellow (Wollpryla Hochbausch, for those who are still familiar with it). I inherited the yarn from my mother over 15 years ago. You can only make doll clothes out of it, since the finished product turns out quite stiff and you always end up sweating in it.

My oldest wool is a skein from 1948/49. My mother-in-law used it to knit sweaters and socks for my ex-husband.
I also have two bags of blue and beige bobbles that are about 30 years old.
I still have some leftover yarn from sweaters I knitted or crocheted for my daughter 40 years ago.
