Dear community,
What do you consider to be basic crafting skills?

Basic skills include knowing how to thread a sewing needle and/or an embroidery needle. If you want to knit, you should also know how to cast on stitches—the same goes for crocheting.
When sewing, you should be able to operate a basic sewing machine and know how to use a pair of fabric scissors. You should also make sure that the fabric is laid out straight and even when sewing, not at an angle or unevenly.
There’s so much more to it, but I want to leave some room for the girls too :-)

Love, Inge

For knitting, I’d limit the basics to casting on stitches and knit stitches—that’s enough to start with for a scarf in garter stitch.
For crocheting, it would be chain stitches and single crochet—enough for that famous pot holder that most of us got to make in elementary school.

I agree with what veronika wrote.

Maybe also add purl stitches and binding off at the end of knitting.

For me, basic skills also include mastering the technical terms. Since patterns are based on technical terms, you need to know what’s meant in the patterns. But thanks to YouTube, you can always look it up if necessary. However, anyone who knits, crochets, or sews can be sure that they’ll learn something new with every craft project.

Best wishes, Ina

I also consider material properties, preparation, and working techniques, as well as the care and handling of tools, to be part of the basics.

In addition to stitches like chain stitches, single crochet, and knit stitches, I consider reading the label to be part of the basics.

To me, basic skills mean being able to work something simple with a basic pattern of knit and purl stitches without any help. This also includes doing a gauge swatch, binding off, and possibly decreasing to get something into shape. And you should be able to follow patterns. And if you don’t understand something, you should be able to ask about it, read up on it, or look it up online. Because you’ll always find what you’re looking for there.
We all started out small, and not everything looked great right away.
