Dear Community,
Do any of you make your own basic clothing items? You can definitely make your own socks, basic T-shirts, and so on if you have enough talent, yarn, fabric, and maybe a sewing machine. ;-)

As you all know by now, I only wear clothes I’ve made myself—including basics like T-shirts and socks :-) For me, it’s not work—it’s a pleasure every time I sew a new outfit. It has two unbeatable advantages: first, it fits perfectly and nothing pinches or chafes, and second, no other woman is walking around in an outfit like that :-)))

Love, Inge

I’m getting better and better at making my own basic clothes. I’m working my way through them one by one. When you make things yourself (whether by knitting, crocheting, sewing, or felting), you get to choose the materials, colors, patterns, and cut yourself—which means fewer bad buys and everything is one-of-a-kind.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve sewn my own panties from scraps of soft cotton jersey fabric. It’s super easy, and they fit like a glove. You only need a little fabric, and once you’ve adjusted the basic pattern to your measurements, you can go into mass production. I’ve written a detailed blog post about this on CP. Here’s a little preview:

Ina, do you have a serger now? That looks so neatly done.
Awesome!

Dear Petra, yes, I now have an overlock sewing machine. I asked for it as a birthday present last May.

For this sewing project, though, I didn’t think the overlock’s finish was as good as that of a regular sewing machine. The overlock machine leaves a wider seam allowance, which you can fold over and stitch down, but a regular straight-stitch seam trimmed back to 3 mm is less noticeable. I discussed this topic in my blog post and showed the differences. The pictures there are also larger.

Thanks for your compliment :-) I really appreciate it.
Best regards, Ina
