Garden Visitor

Unfortunately, I could only take photos of today’s garden visitor through the kitchen window. So the photo quality isn’t great, but I’d like to show them to you anyway.

Allow me to introduce: Mr. Green Woodpecker

 

So far, I’ve only spotted him once.

A Woodpecker

A rather rare visitor in our garden, but all the more welcome for it.

Do you often get visits from woodpeckers?

I’ve only seen him once so far, Petra. I hope my landlord doesn’t cut down the rest of the patio this year. Then maybe I can keep the woodpecker and friends in the garden with some bird feeders.

There are a few of them hanging around here, too—green woodpeckers and spotted woodpeckers. For now, at least. Because the house next door is being torn down, and with it, the beautiful old garden. Then all the birds and squirrels will have to find new trees. Such a shame.

I always think it’s a shame when nature has to make way for something else. Luckily, we have a natural garden and get to design it ourselves. We also have a hedgehog, which we’re now feeding properly again for the winter. We also have common toads living with us, who are hard at work keeping the snails in check. These animals only live where they have places to hide. Unfortunately, almost all the gardens around us are manicured to perfection—not a single blade of grass is allowed to grow too tall. Sadly, there are no hiding spots there.
