Show off your dirndls

Oktoberfest is dirndl season.
I wore my very first dirndl dress on Sunday at Oktoberfest. I took first place in the women’s category, and my prize was this cute little heart.
It was a lot of fun.

That really suits you! I don’t have a dirndl at all. When I was a kid, I had one with a pink Vichy check pattern—the apron had sky-blue checks.

We’re in the middle of the Wasen right now, and the girls and guys look so great. It’s really lovely to watch.

  I got a dirndl for my first day of school. I still remember it had a small checkered pattern and was sewn by my mom. Dirndls were pretty rare where I grew up, since I grew up in Swabia. That was my first and last dirndl.

I sewed this children’s dirndl for my granddaughter over 20 years ago, when she was on holiday with her parents on a farm in the Allgäu.
Later on, I also sewed a dirndl for myself, but when I put it on, I was honestly shocked, because it really showed how crooked I had become. I took it off, unpicked the whole thing again and made something else out of it, because I would NEVER EVER have gone out in public like that.

Dirndls are such wonderful garments, and I’ve sewn quite a few of them. Unfortunately, there are no photos of most of them, because it was ages ago. When my daughters were teenagers, I made each of them a dirndl to suit her type, and a matching traditional jacket to go with it. They all wore those outfits for a very long time. :-)
For my youngest daughter, I once sewed a made-to-measure dirndl, also years ago, and I do have a picture of that one. She wanted it long back then. Today she doesn’t fit into it anymore either :-) I once sewed the four-piece dirndl with the red bodice for myself, but I haven’t fit into that for a long time either ;-) :-)

Back here in the lowlands, we didn’t used to have Oktoberfest either. It only came here over time.
But as a child, I had one—unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of it anymore. I remember black fabric with lots of red roses on it, paired with a white apron. I loved wearing it, along with white knee-high socks and black patent leather shoes with little straps.

Andrea, your dirndl really looks great on you! 

You can tell, dear Andrea, that you felt right at home in that dirndl. You definitely deserved first prize. It’s just a shame that it has to hang in the closet again for months on end. There aren’t that many occasions for it in Brandenburg—unless you want to stand out :-)

Unfortunately, I’ve never had a dirndl, and it wouldn’t suit me at all anyway. My daughter once had a knitted dirndl. Her grandma had brought it back from Brazil.

Thank you all. It was a bit unusual, but I actually felt very comfortable in it.
Everyone at the dance said I looked chic.

Ina, you’re right—there aren’t that many opportunities like this here. Maybe again for Carnival :-)
