what is the difference between a stole and a scarf?

I'm not really sure, but I'd guess it's the width. A scarf is usually narrower and is wrapped around the neck, while a stole also drapes over the shoulders.

A stole is worn draped over the shoulders like a shawl, except that a stole is rectangular and usually wider than a scarf. That’s why I call my knitted piece a “knitted stole-shawl”—because it’s both.
