As things currently stand, we have more than 3,700 patterns for triangular shawls in the shop. Why are triangular shawls so popular?

Triangular scarves have a very long tradition, stretching back centuries. They’ve always proven to be practical companions, no matter where or when. I think that’s part of the reason.

A triangular scarf is a manageable project—you can combine many different stitch types and patterns. There’s no stress about one-size-fits-all, and you can knit them loosely or more tightly. And anyway… you always need one in a special color, or one that matches that new shirt, sweater, tunic, or dress perfectly… and one for every kind of weather…

You can crochet or knit them in any size you like.

Personally, I prefer them as an alternative to scarves, because I just wrap them around once and let the ends hang down. With a normal, narrow scarf, a lot of the end hangs down, and my bronchial tubes still get cold because the scarf only wraps directly around my neck. With a triangular scarf, the tip nicely covers the décolletage and thus keeps the bronchial tubes warm as well.

They keep you warm in winter.
In summer, they’re great for cool evenings.
I also like them with fringe.

I have a light, airy triangular scarf made from a sturdier cotton yarn. It’s meant for summer—
wrapped around my shoulders in the morning and tied around my hips in the afternoon.
