magic ring

Hi there, I’m brand new here.
I bought the pattern for Mala Fly so I can crochet this cute ladybug for my granddaughter, and I understand everything except the “magic ring”—what is that? Please don’t laugh at me!
I’d really appreciate an easy-to-understand explanation, and thanks in advance.

Don’t stress yourself out so much about that silly “magic ring”. There’s an easier way.
- make a loop like you do at the start of any crochet project, leaving a longer tail
- crochet as many stitches into that first loop as specified in the pattern
- then just continue as the pattern instructs
And just like that, you’ve got your “magic ring”. Depending on the yarn and hook size, a small hole may form. Just pull it closed with the long tail from the beginning. Done.

Have fun with the ladybug. My grandchildren love my crocheted animals!
