Back and front loops in crochet

what is the difference between working into/crocheting into the back loop and the front loop?

That’s an interesting question! Crocheting only into the back loop, only into the front loop, or alternating between the two creates different patterns.
Crocheting only into the back loop creates a ribbed pattern. If you only insert the hook into the front loop, the result is smoother.
When crocheted in rounds, the result looks different again.
The finished piece also becomes more flexible and elastic.

Additionally, you can attach new pieces, change the direction of crocheting, or even crochet in two layers (overlay crochet).

With amigurumi, when you work into the back loop, you can also crochet fringe yarn or something similar into the front loop.
