Cone yarn is any yarn that is on a cone.
Cones are most commonly used with knitting machines and in industrial processing. 
Yarn cones are also needed for winding gradient cakes.

A cone is basically just the larger version of a ball of yarn. While a ball of yarn weighs 50 or 100 g, cone yarns can weigh anywhere from 300 to 1,500 g, depending on the type of yarn.

But cones aren’t only used for knitting or crochet yarns; they’re also used for sewing thread. An overlock machine also requires cones.

Does anyone know of any good yarn suppliers for cones—for example, cotton blends and 100% high-bulk acrylic cones?

I worked with quite a lot of cone yarn for a while. Most of the time, the yarn still had the same yardage as regular skeins. I thought that was great, because then you don’t have to weave in as many ends as when working with skeins. Unfortunately, the retailer where I used to buy these yarns doesn’t have as great a selection anymore—at least not online.

If you have cones of thin yarn, you can work with multiple strands to make it thicker. This is great for knitting or crocheting lace, for example, because you can combine several thin strands to achieve the desired yardage.

I can recommend Traumgarne for that.

They have both ready-made Bobbels and the like, as well as cones for winding yourself.
The cones are at least made from a cotton blend.
