Unraveling yarn cakes

Dear users, dear authors,
I know you all like to unravel things. Is it possible to unravel yarn cakes and reuse them if needed?

I’ve done this several times. It worked without any problems. The good thing was that the (untwisted) Bobbel yarn cakes were easier to work with again after unraveling. Because they had already been
worked up before, the strands were already more intertwined, so crocheting or knitting worked
better. It didn’t happen as often anymore that strands weren’t caught by the needle.

No problem with bobbles made of cotton or a cotton-acrylic blend. For bobbles containing alpaca or other fibrous materials, I’d be just as careful as I would be with yarn from a ball.

Yes, what Marita says is true. You do have to pay attention to the material. Mine were these cotton-acrylic yarn cakes.

I could also imagine that yarn cakes with an additional Lurex thread might be more difficult to unravel again.
