Dear users, dear designers,
would you like to share something about traditional crochet patterns and their history? Does that interest you, or would you rather just crochet?

Dear Josefa, I tried Googling “traditional crochet patterns.” I got tons of crochet patterns, but none that were specifically “traditional.” I don’t think such a thing even exists. A stitch is a stitch, and one stitch somehow leads to the next. That’s probably why there’s nothing to write about it.

Best regards, Ina

What I meant were patterns that have been around for ages and remain very popular time and time again. Cable patterns, for example.

Hi,
I thought I’d chime in on this too—I’ll give it a try, anyway. I find the topic very interesting; I’ve actually never really thought about it before. Granny squares immediately come to mind. I started crocheting when I was 6—about 50 years ago—and then moved on to knitting and sewing. I’m sure there are traditional patterns that have been passed down through generations. Back in the day, women used to make their own clothes. I still remember my mother telling me that even as a child, she helped crochet and knit for her eight younger sisters. They’d even unravel items and reuse the yarn. I’ll do some research and let you know if I find anything.
Best regards,
Carola

When it comes to knitting, a few things come to mind—Aran patterns, for example, or those framed diamonds, which have been on and off as trends for ages.
As for crocheting, I only know about granny squares, though I think they’re actually much older and more traditional—but I don’t know the history behind them either.

There are so many traditional patterns.... I’m thinking of those handkerchiefs edged with crochet, and my grandma still had that bed linen with crocheted lace. We used to rummage through her old dowry chest when we were kids. There was this bedding where, in the top corner of the pillowcase, this beautiful lace was sewn in.... And on the shelves in the kitchen cabinet, lace borders were also attached—very carefully with little pins...
