Crocheting a buttonhole

Good morning,
I’m currently crocheting a handbag using shell stitches. Now I want to sew on a large button. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can easily crochet a buttonhole? I was already wondering if I should just crochet a row of chain stitches?!
There isn’t really a pattern for this, since the original pattern was for a backpack.

I never would have thought on my own that I could crochet single crochets right onto my shell stitches. Sometimes you’re just plain clueless! :-)
