2 “Dillie” Cosmetic Bags

Hello dear all,

fall/winter is always sewing time for me. It’s not so hot in my attic room then, and the garden isn’t calling me anymore either. I just sewed sweaters, hats, and neck warmers for the grandchildren. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to taking photos because they had already taken everything with them beforehand.

I also sewed 2 “Dillie” cosmetic bags as Christmas gifts, using a pattern from here. A woman can always use one. Each one in the favorite colors and styles of the future owners.

This is now the 2nd time I’ve sewn this bag, and I have to say it gets better every time. The outer fabric and lining fabric are each reinforced with iron-on interfacing, so the bag keeps its shape nicely. This time I’m especially proud of the zippers. I had quite a bit of trouble with them the first time. Now I spent a lot of time working with my zipper foot and experimenting. Once you know how it works, a zipper foot is a big help. But since there are different kinds of zippers, you have to think it through each time to see whether it fits the way you imagine it will.

Enough theory, you may have a look. With my first bag, I had the problem that the “pull tab” on the zipper was missing. So this time I simply tied tassels on. A little decoration and practical too.

Wow, Ina, those look absolutely gorgeous. I’d snatch up the one with the rose pattern in a heartbeat. The light green goes perfectly with it. The red one is pretty, of course, too.
You really do work your magic to create such amazing things. Where do you get these gorgeous fabrics?

yes, the rose fabric is my favorite, too. You can find it on the Giljo-Stoffe website; it’s called “Blumenranken Stoff Grün Julia’s Garden Floral Vine.” It’s part of a series of five patchwork fabrics, all of which are color- and pattern-coordinated. I could also imagine making some lovely summer pillows for the balcony out of them. Lots of big and small ones…—oh, that should look lovely.

A friend gave me the red-and-white fabric. She goes to a sewing class once a week. There, under the professional guidance of several expert women, she’s learning to sew. With this fabric, I want to show her that I can do it on my own, too. We don’t have a sewing class here, so I have to teach myself everything.

But I’m still a long way from being ready for a class. I’m a beginner and Inge is a pro. She actually trained as a seamstress and has been sewing for decades. But we both enjoy sewing—you can’t do it without that.
