Dear users, dear authors,
what are the advantages of stockinette stitch, and what exactly is it?

Stockinette stitch is when the right side consists only of knit stitches. You knit the right side row with knit stitches and the wrong side row with purl stitches.

The advantage of a stockinette-stitch piece is that it grows faster than if you were knitting garter stitch (i.e., both the right side row and the wrong side row with knit stitches).

When I knit in the round, I only need to knit knit stitches for stockinette-stitch pieces. That comes easily to me, and I really like it.

However, you shouldn’t knit too loosely or unevenly, or else it will end up full of holes.

Stockinette stitch is a great base for knitting in patterns or embroidering them on later.

My jacket is knitted in stockinette stitch; I don’t like patterns on cardigans, but love the simple, understated look. For me, less is definitely more.
I’ve finally finished the top of my first front piece—I was starting to think it would never come together ;-) :-)

Best regards, Inge

When it comes to stockinette stitch, I’ve found that my work turns out very even when I knit in the round. That means I only ever work knit stitches.

If I knit in rows, my wrong side rows with the purl stitches don’t turn out as nice and even. Every now and then, a loose stitch sneaks in.

So I try to knit in the round as much as possible.

The advantage of stockinette stitch is that it uses very little yarn.

Hi,
I got some hand-dyed merino wool as a Christmas gift from my loved ones. Do you have any tips for a stockinette stitch pattern (for a shawl)? 🤔
I think the dye pattern will look better with stockinette stitch than with garter stitch.
As simple as possible, without any stitch pattern, if possible 😉

Dear Susanne,
knitting a shawl in stockinette stitch definitely requires a differently knitted edge so it doesn’t curl up so much.
Alternatively, I could also imagine double knitting for a stockinette-stitch surface. Then both the underside and top side are in stockinette stitch. However, that would make the shawl twice as thick...🤷🏻‍♀️
Best regards

Hi,
I haven’t tried double knitting yet—I’d have to look into it and give it a try first—but I’m not sure if I’d dare to tackle a shawl right away!
I know the edge shouldn’t be worked in stockinette; I was just wondering if anyone might have a suitable pattern for me.

Have you checked out the patterns for knitted shawls here or on YouTube?

Thanks, Ruth
I tried entering “stockinette stitch” in the search here, but nothing comes up.
I haven’t tried YouTube yet—I’ll have to give it a try.
Mostly, “garter stitch” comes up.
