Knitting with two strands

Hi everyone, I’m Katie and I’m new here. I’m currently knitting a sweater using two strands of yarn from two different balls. They’re sitting side by side in a box—they unwind easily, so everything’s going great so far. What really puzzles me—and is also slowing me down a lot—is that the two strands keep twisting together, even after just a few stitches.
By the way, I’m working with “High Twist 4-ply” yarn :)—the name says it all....
Seriously, I’d be incredibly grateful for any tips on how to prevent the two strands from twisting together.

Hi Katie, so you’re knitting with two strands from both balls at the same time? In that case, I’d advise you to wind the yarn(s) together onto ONE ball beforehand.

I also have a question about this: how do you knit with double yarn? Do I need to twist the two strands together first?

Will you be able to tell later on in the fabric that two strands of yarn were used?

Hi knit stitch, no, the yarns come off the balls at the same time (or you wind them together onto one ball beforehand)—just like you would with a single strand. You just have to make sure you always “catch” both strands when knitting.

If you have two identical strands of the same yarn and color, the result will be a thicker knit fabric.
If you use different yarns (color and/or materials), you’ll also get at least a slightly “mottled” effect. That’s often the goal, after all. Try it out in a gauge swatch first :-)
