Sewing straight seams

Dear users, dear authors,
As a beginner, how can I sew nice, straight seams? Is practice the only way, or is there a trick to it?

Practice, practice, practice, and practice some more. You might want to attach an edge guide to your sewing machine until you get the hang of it and can sew straight.

With cotton—especially canvas—it goes pretty quickly, but I get nervous when it comes to these stretchy fabrics. And actually, T-shirts are the only thing I’d really like to sew, but heaven help me, I don’t dare try—it’ll just warp even under the ruler.

Veronika, you shouldn’t pull on the fabric, just guide it loosely so it can run straight through the sewing machine. And with jersey there’s a trick: place greaseproof paper or tissue paper under the presser foot, then nothing will slip or stretch, and you can easily pull the paper out afterward
If you’re worried the sewing machine will *eat* the fabric, start a little farther in and sew just 2 stitches back to secure it, then continue sewing forward, and nothing will get *eaten* ;-) by the sewing machine. Another important thing is to test the presser-foot pressure on a small piece of fabric first, because that’s often why things slip

Best regards, Inge

The trick is actually not to look at the needle (which beginners often do), but to focus on the fabric edge and the guide lines on the sewing plate.
You can also stick a piece of masking tape or painter’s tape on the plate and guide the fabric edge along it.
And it’s better to sew a little slower at first.

@Veronika
Cotton jersey hardly distorts and doesn’t slip away; with a tight zigzag stitch (length 2.0 and width 1.0), almost nothing can go wrong.
It’s completely normal for seams in jersey to get a bit wavy—just press them with plenty of steam, and the fabric will lie flat again.

Jersey is best sewn with a serger or coverlock machine, but I know that not everyone has these machines or knows how to use them.
That way, nothing will ripple—unless you want it to at the hem with a rolled hem.

Thanks for your tips—someday I’m sure the urge to sew will strike me again, and then I’ll give it a try... probably... maybe. :-))

Go for it, Veronika! I’m not exactly an expert seamstress, but jersey isn’t really a problem! So jersey shouldn’t be an issue for you if you’ve already sewn a little bit—
