Dear users, dear authors,
Are there any tips for reading a crochet chart?

Well, basically, each symbol just represents a stitch.
There are standard symbols, but many authors always include a crochet chart with the patterns that explain what each symbol means.
The crochet chart shows which stitch goes where. The stitches are arranged in the crochet chart exactly as they will appear in the finished piece.

I used to be “afraid” of crochet charts, but this is what helped me:
I looked for a pattern that included both written instructions and pictures, as well as a crochet chart. Then I crocheted following the written instructions while simultaneously trying to figure out the chart. After a few rows, I was automatically working from the chart 😊

Crochet charts (different symbols stand for different types of stitches) are read in the right side rows always from right to left, and the wrong side rows (even-numbered rows) always from left to right.

Personally, I like working from crochet charts with symbols.

In addition to the tips mentioned above, I’d like to add:
Some crochet charts have the stitches drawn directly onto a photo of the finished piece. This is the best way to learn, because you can see how the symbols correspond to the actual stitch pattern. To start with, though, you should choose a simple pattern, because relief stitches involve additional effects that can’t be represented by symbols alone.
It’s often the sheer number of symbols that can be intimidating, but don’t let that discourage you—just work through it stitch by stitch and row by row.

I wish you every success and the courage to just give it a try!
Warm regards, Karoline

Hi,
I personally prefer working from a crochet chart. Once you’ve gotten the hang of the symbols and the direction (right to left, left to right), it was really easy for me.

A friend of mine can’t get the hang of it at all (right > left / left > right)—it confuses her.
So just give it a try; usually, there’s a certain number of rows that repeats—
it could be 2 rows or 4 rows, for example. Once you get the hang of that, it should work out 😉

Just stick with it—usually, it’ll “click” eventually.
Have fun trying it out 😘
