Should I knit a multifunctional scarf for summer?

Hi,
do you think I could knit a multifunctional scarf for summer, or would it be too warm?

Maybe made of microfiber, polyester, or silk?

I can’t compete with the high-tech materials used in industrial production. The store-bought ones are breathable, quick-drying, stretchy, and lightweight, so I think I’d get less enjoyment out of a homemade version.

And is it better to crochet or knit bandanas? I’m asking mainly because I haven’t crocheted since elementary school and would really like to stick with knitting. (Just asking in general, for winter too.)

thank you so much for your thoughtful answer. It’s not that easy to answer. I’m looking for sun protection for the neck and nape of the neck for summer, for men to wear while hiking.

Actually, every scarf is multifunctional because you can wear it in different ways—for example, over your head or over your shoulder—but that’s not a must.

I don’t have any experience wearing scarves. I’ll probably have to try them out myself first so I know what I like.

If you’re going for bandanas, you’re probably better off sewing them.
