what is meant by "knitting in stockinette stitch"?

This involves knitting the right side row and purling the wrong side row. This results in a very smooth front surface, as seen on sweaters or jackets, for example.

My stockinette stitch never turns out very even. Unfortunately, I always knit the wrong side row a little too loosely.

To avoid this, I knit in the round whenever possible. That way, it’s even and I get a nice stitch pattern.
