Patchwork again

Since I sorted through my fabrics yesterday—and got rid of some—https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/forum/topic/183391/schrank-ausmisten#lc, I realized I have so many small scraps that they’ll be enough for one or two patchwork quilts. I now have 25 different little pieces of fabric on my cutting mat, all waiting to become a quilt or two. Let’s see how many I end up making—if it’s not enough, I still have plenty of scraps in my box, even though I threw a 60-liter bag in the trash today; it contained pieces that had been sitting in storage for ages and that I’ll never use again

Oh, Inge, turning all those little fabric scraps into a big quilt—that looks like a lot of work. But I think it’s exciting. With every piece of fabric, you know what became of the rest. They’re all little mementos.

I hope you have lots of fun sewing it together. If I arranged my fabrics that way, I’d have more pink and fuchsia. Those don’t seem to be your colors at all. That really shows your preferences.

Patchwork used to be a big passion of mine; everyone in my family has at least three of these patchwork quilts that I made, some of which were even sewn entirely by hand. I’ve even turned family shirts into these quilts, just like old curtains or summer clothes that weren’t being worn anymore. These fabrics here are all scraps from projects I sewed at one time, either for myself or for one of my grandchildren or daughters.

So, the top is ready for quilting, but I’ll do that tomorrow. That’s enough for today; I got further than I thought. They’ll be small quilts, about 80 cm x 80 cm, for toddlers or babies.
I still have enough left for at least one quilt, or maybe even two—we’ll see.

So, the first blanket is finished, and it turned out to be about 80 cm x 80 cm—perfect for babies and toddlers up to about 18–24 months. I didn’t include any batting because I wanted them to be lightweight so the little ones don’t start sweating underneath, but also so they don’t have to lie without any padding at all. For the backing, I used old flannel sheets—they’re soft, provide a little warmth, and are cozy enough for the little ones. The binding used to be a summer dress that belonged to a granddaughter of one of my school friends :-)

The second quilt is also finished, and I still have enough squares left for one more quilt :-) This time I arranged the squares differently, and suddenly there’s a whole new design—it’s a great way to really let your creativity run wild :-)
