Info on Fabric Cutters

Hi everyone,

I’d love to get back to sewing, but… I’m having a really hard time cutting fabric with scissors.
A rotary cutter with a cutting mat or cutting ruler seems like it would be helpful.
Does anyone here have experience with this, and could someone PLEASE recommend a tool that’s GOOD AND PRACTICAL? 

With rotary cutters, though, you can’t cut everything you want to sew. There are rotary cutters with blade sizes of 45 mm and 28 mm; I have both myself. Rotary cutters are good for jersey fabrics or any fabrics that are a bit slippery, as well as for patchwork projects. There are several good brands out there; I personally have Olfa, Prym, and Clover—they are good brands, and you can use the blades in them. It also takes some practice to cut well with a rotary cutter; it doesn’t just do everything on its own. It would also be good to have a large cutting mat measuring 60 cm x 90 cm so you have enough space and don’t have to keep moving the fabric along. The right rulers would also be helpful for straight cuts, so you get a straight cutting edge and not a “Säuschwänzle,” as we say here when something is cut crooked :-) ;-) In short, those are the most important things you should know and have if you want to work with a rotary cutter.

I totally agree with Akela. I have the Olfa rotary cutter and am very happy with it.

It’s best to start with a ruler before cutting freehand. You’ll definitely need a cutting mat, too!
