I'm a complete beginner when it comes to crochet charts. I've already taught myself quite a bit, but I don't understand the beginning of the 1st row. Can someone explain it to me? That would be really kind. Thanks, Petra

OK, I’ll explain it differently without the picture. According to the pattern, I’m supposed to chain 3 and make 3 slip stitches at the same time. 

You start with 8 chain stitches and join them with 1 slip stitch to form a ring.
Then:
Round 1:
5 chain stitches, 1 single crochet, 4 chain stitches. Then repeat this sequence 6 more times: 1 single crochet and 4 chain stitches. Finish the round with 1 slip stitch into the first chain stitch of the round.
Then work 2 slip stitches into the next 2 chain stitches.
After that, start Round 2 with 3 chain stitches and 1 double crochet.
