What are the advantages of handmade / knitted / crocheted / sewn socks?

Dear users, dear authors,
socks are actually relatively inexpensive to buy in stores. Why do you go to the trouble of knitting, crocheting, or sewing your own socks?

For one thing, it’s naturally a wonderfully relaxing pastime, and it also lets me choose the color combination, pattern, and shape myself. Personally, for example, I prefer socks with a very short leg—I usually roll store-bought socks all the way down.

Yes, it’s fun to pick out the yarn and design the entire pair yourself. And it’s a real sense of accomplishment when they’re finished.

It also uses up—at least when sewing—those little scraps of fabric. :)
By the way, I try not to compare DIY items to store-bought clothing. That’s not really what DIY is about, anyway ;).

Best regards,
Sonja (who’s currently tinkering with a pattern for yoga socks)

The socks can be tailored exactly to fit your own feet.
Not to mention the variety of patterns.

Personally, I’m not a fan of sewn socks at all—the seams dig into my feet no matter how soft they are, so I don’t wear them. As for hand-knitted socks, it’s just like the girls said above: choosing the yarn is an experience in itself—feeling the texture and playing with the colors of *colorful* yarn. I haven’t knitted any in years because my drawer is so full I can barely close it—I need to wear those first.:-) It contains the whole color palette of what was available back then. Slowly but surely, though, one or two pairs are saying goodbye as they fall apart on their own ;-), but there are still enough—especially since I only wear socks during the winter months; in the warmer months, I don’t wear any at all.

Best regards, Inge
