Counting Knitting Stitches

Dear users, dear authors,
Are there any tips and tricks for counting knitting stitches?

I imagine this is a question with very individual answers. When I have to count a lot of stitches, I always count them in groups of three. I have no idea why, but my brain seems to handle this counting pattern best. I can see and feel the 3 stitches and jump from one group of three to the next. But if there are more to count, nobody’s allowed to interrupt me—otherwise I have to start all over again. At 100, I make a mark and start over from the beginning.

I place a marker every 20 stitches; that makes it easier for me when I’m knitting large pieces.
